What this code covers

Census defines 332999 by exclusion. It takes fabricated metal products that are not forgings, stampings, cutlery, hand tools, structural metal, boilers, tanks, containers, hardware, springs, wire products, machine shop products, turned products, fasteners, valves, bearings, ammunition, arms, or fabricated pipe. The examples Census gives include metal pallets, pipe hangers and supports, safes and vaults, permanent metallic magnets, portable metal ladders, industrial patterns, and steel wool.

In practice buyers also use it for welded and machined assemblies that mix several processes, and many small shops register under it because their work does not sit cleanly in 332710 or 332313.

What federal buyers typically ask for

Because the code is broad, the notices are broad. DLA posts pipe hangers, brackets, pallets, and assorted hardware by stock number. Shipyards post hangers, supports, and foundations. Depots post ladders, stands, racks, and one-off fabricated assemblies. Contracting officers also use this code when a part does not obviously belong anywhere else, so it is worth watching even if it is not your primary code.

Quality terms follow the part rather than the code. Most notices are build-to-print with a certificate of conformance, material certs, and first article on a new source. Welded items cite a welding standard and inspection. Steel and titanium content brings the DFARS specialty metals clause. Magnets have their own DFARS restriction on where certain rare earth materials may be processed, so check the clause list on any magnet buy. Drawings for weapon system parts are often export controlled.

Total small business set-asides are very common here, because most items are low dollar and many sources exist.

Before you bid

Do not let the vague code hide a specific requirement. A notice filed under 332999 can still carry a welding standard, a source approval note, or a magnet restriction that decides whether you can perform.
