Bring your own AI key, and choose the model that reads for you

Your plan includes a number of AI readings each month. If you want more, or want a particular model, the owner of the account can add a key from a provider you already use. Readings written on your own key are not counted against your plan. Your provider bills you for them.

counted over all of it, not over a sample

Which providers

A key can come from any of nine providers: Anthropic, OpenAI, Google Gemini, xAI (Grok), Mistral, Perplexity, DeepSeek, Groq or OpenRouter.

Choose the provider, paste the key and pick a model. Most providers come with a short list of named models, each with one line saying what it is for. Once the key is saved you can also choose from every model that key is allowed to use, read from the provider itself. Where a provider has no short list, the model is chosen that way from the start.

What you set

All of it is on the Account screen, under Your own AI key, and each choice is saved as you make it.

The model

One of the named models, or any model the provider lists for your key. A model is tried before it is kept, so one your key may not use is never the one in use.

When the key is used

For every reading, or your plan's readings first and then your key. The second uses the readings you already pay for and turns to the key when they run out.

How long an answer may be

Short, Standard or Long. Long allows twice the length.

How much thinking to ask for

A little, some or a lot, offered only for a model that takes the setting. More thinking takes longer and costs more with your provider.

What happens to the key

The key is tried with one small request before it is kept. A key the provider turns away is not saved, and the screen says why: the key was refused, the account behind it has no credit, or the key may not use that model.

It is stored sealed and never shown again, not even to you. The Account screen shows the provider, the model, the last four characters, when it was added, when it last worked and how many readings it has answered this month. You can test it, replace it or remove it at any time.

It is used only to write what you ask for.

If the key stops working

Keys are revoked, accounts run out of credit and models are retired. When a reading meets one of those, it is written on your plan's readings instead, and the answer says so with a link to the Account screen. The key is not tried again on every reading. Fix it with your provider and press Test, or replace the key.

Where it stops

There is one key for an account and the owner holds it. Everybody on the account reads on it, as they share the readings of the month, and a person on a seat is told only that the account has a key. A key of your own comes with a paid plan: One Code does not include anything a model writes, with or without a key. A reading on your own key is still a model reading a federal record. It can misread, and every AI-written block is labeled as one.
