What they buy
The delta is the host unit for the Space Coast launch complexes. It buys base operations and facility work: maintenance, repairs, construction, utilities, grounds, and environmental services. It buys range support: instrumentation, communications, tracking and telemetry maintenance, weather, and safety services. And it buys the everyday supplies and equipment any large installation needs.
For a small manufacturer, that means fabricated steel, machined replacement parts for range and pad equipment, brackets and enclosures, electrical assemblies, and repair of specialized gear. Launch vehicles and satellites are bought elsewhere, mostly by Space Systems Command and the launch companies.
How they buy
Notices post on SAM.gov under the delta's contracting office at Patrick. Base support and range services run on multi-year contracts that come up for recompete on a set schedule. Smaller work goes out as requests for quotation, often as simplified acquisitions awarded to a purchase order, and repeat needs may be covered by blanket purchase agreements.
Many local buys are set aside for small business, and construction and facility work often carries a socioeconomic set-aside. The contracting office also uses the government purchase card for very small buys, which never appear as notices at all.
How a small shop gets in
Register in SAM.gov and set an alert for the Patrick contracting office. Because much of the work is local, a shop in Brevard County has a real advantage on quick-turn repairs and fabrication.
Contact the small business specialist at the base, who can tell you what is bought locally, what comes through the base service contractor, and when the large support contracts recompete. Getting on that contractor's vendor list is often the fastest route to work, since it buys parts and subcontracts repairs. Respond to sources sought notices and keep a one-page capability statement ready.
