What this code covers

NAICS 334412 covers shops that make the bare board itself, rigid or flexible, before any part is soldered to it: imaging the copper pattern on a laminate, drilling, plating the holes, etching, applying solder mask and legend, and routing the panel to shape. Loading components onto the board belongs under 334418.

Defense and aerospace buyers ask for multilayer rigid boards with controlled impedance, rigid-flex for tight packaging, polyimide flex circuits that replace a harness, heavy copper boards for power, boards on high-frequency laminates for radar and radio work, backplanes, and legacy boards rebuilt from old drawings after the original fabricator left the market.

What federal buyers typically ask for

Expect IPC-6012 for rigid boards or IPC-6013 for flex, usually at Class 3, with acceptability to IPC-A-600. Many military boards cite MIL-PRF-31032 or the older MIL-PRF-55110, which means your shop must be qualified as a fabricator, not just the part. A first article is common for a new source. A certificate of conformance with lot traceability and microsection coupons ships with every lot.

Drawings for boards inside a weapon system are often ITAR controlled, so you need ITAR registration before you can see the data package. Many of these boards are DLA critical items that require source approval before award. Counterfeit part clauses appear less often on bare boards than on loaded assemblies, but laminate traceability is still requested.

DLA spare board buys are often total small business set-asides when more than one approved source exists. When the only approved source is a large prime, the buy tends to go sole source, and platform work reaches small board shops as subcontracts.

PSC codes that often pair with this NAICS

PSCNameWhy it matters
5998Electrical and Electronic Assemblies, Boards, Cards, and Associated HardwareThe usual home for bare boards and backplanes bought as spares.
5999Miscellaneous Electrical and Electronic ComponentsCatch-all class for board-level items.
5963Electronic ModulesModules built on a board that may be its own NSN.
5895Miscellaneous Communication EquipmentRadio boards often carry the end item class.
5975Electrical Hardware and SuppliesStiffeners, card guides and hardware shipped with a board.

PSC is assigned by the buyer, so the same board can appear under different classes.

Before you bid

Read the qualification line before you price the board. If the solicitation cites MIL-PRF-31032 and your shop is not listed for it, you cannot deliver a compliant part. Plan qualification around the recompete date, not the bid date.
