What this code covers

NAICS 336412 covers manufacturing aircraft engines, turbine and reciprocating, and the parts that go into them, along with building prototypes, converting a propulsion system, and complete overhaul and rebuilding of a propulsion system. Airframe parts sit under 336413, and rocket propulsion under 336415.

For a small shop the code means engine piece parts: blades and vanes, cases and housings, seals and shrouds, shafts, combustor hardware, fuel and oil system components, ignition parts, brackets and tubes. The Air Force engine depot at Tinker, NAVSUP Weapon Systems Support and DLA Aviation buy these as spares, and the engine manufacturers buy them as production and overhaul material.

What federal buyers typically ask for

AS9100 is expected, with Nadcap accreditation for heat treating, coating, welding, brazing and nondestructive testing. Material is bought to AMS specifications with full certs, and the DFARS specialty metals clause applies to nearly everything because the alloys are titanium, nickel and high-strength steel. First article inspection is standard for a new source.

Most engine parts are critical safety items under the flight safety parts programs. A new source needs an engineering source approval before it can win, and the package typically asks for drawings or a reverse engineered technical data package, process plans and test evidence. Military engine data is usually ITAR controlled. Any electronic engine control or sensor brings the counterfeit electronic part clause.

Parts with government-owned data and more than one approved source are often small business set-asides. Parts where the engine manufacturer holds the only approved source go sole source, and that is where DLA and the depots run reverse engineering and source development programs that a small shop can join.

Before you bid

Confirm the material is available in the quantity and cert you need before you quote. Nickel and titanium alloy lead times can be longer than the delivery schedule on the notice, and a specialty metals clause means you cannot substitute foreign melt to make the date.
