What this code covers

NAICS 335931 covers devices that carry current in a wiring system: solderless terminals and lugs, electrical contacts, plugs and receptacles, bus bars, lamp holders, lightning arrestors and similar hardware. The line between this code and 334417 is electrical versus electronic: a power receptacle sits here, a signal connector sits there.

Defense demand runs through every platform. Ships need shipboard receptacles, plugs and bus bar assemblies. Aircraft need crimp terminals, splices and terminal boards built to AS and MS standard part numbers. Ground vehicles and radar shelters need battery terminals, bus bars and ground straps. Most of it is managed by DLA Land and Maritime or DLA Aviation by national stock number, with NAVSUP Weapon Systems Support adding its own spares.

What federal buyers typically ask for

Standard parts are the rule. A terminal or splice will point to a specification such as MIL-T-7928 or an SAE AS document with a qualified products list, and the buyer wants a listed source or a distributor with the manufacturer's certificate of conformance. Drawing-controlled items such as bus bar assemblies typically add a first article for a new source. Plating and insulation are called out by material, so material certs travel with the part.

Copper is not a specialty metal, but steel or nickel alloy contacts and hardware can bring the DFARS specialty metals clause into play. ITAR is uncommon for commodity devices and more likely for assemblies drawn for a specific weapon system. Items that feed a critical system may require source approval before award.

Small business set-asides are common on DIBBS for these parts, and commercial item procedures are common too. On a set-aside the nonmanufacturer rule applies to distributors. Larger vehicle and shipbuilding lots tend to flow through the primes and yards as subcontracts.

Before you bid

Match the part to the spec revision on the notice, not the one in your catalog. Terminals and receptacles are cheap to make and easy to reject when the plating, marking or revision is off, and a rejected lot on a small buy erases the margin.
